Skills - Recognizing Nouns

A noun is a person, place or thing.

Write the nouns you find in the following sentences.

 

1. John Smith was a soldier in the English army.

2. This man had fought in many countries in Europe.
3. In 1607 Smith sailed from England to America.
4. Many people came and built a small town called Jamestown.
5. During the long winter, many people in Jamestown died.
6. The settlers needed food to keep alive.
7. Smith often traded with the Indians for food.
8. Before long, Smith had become a leader of the town.
9. One day Smith was captured by some Indians.
10. Powhatan, chief of the Indians, came to talk to the white man.

11. Smith put his hand into his pocket and took out a compass.

12. The Indians stared at the moving needle in the compass.

13. Suddenly a young girl ran out of a house.

14. This girl was Pocahontas, the daughter of Powhatan.

15. Pocahontas asked her father not to harm the stranger.
16. Finally Powhatan let Smith go free.
17. Sometimes Pocahontas went to visit her friends in Jamestown.
18. John Rolf and Smith were good friends.
19. Didn't Rolf and Pocahontas marry and go to England?
20. The people in Europe were glad to meet this native of America.
