Sentences Lesson 002

Skills - Writing complete sentences
A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought.
Example - John has a dog.
A group of words that does not express a complete thought is not a sentence.
Example - The boy made
To be a sentence you would have to tell what the boy made.
Read the following paragraphs carefully. Then ask five questions about the story which you have read. DO NOT ask questions which can be answered by YES or NO.

George Washington, often called "The Father of His Country", was born in Virginia on February 22, 1732. When he was a small boy, he wanted to run away and become a sailor. However, he never went to sea but became a soldier instead. He grew up to be a large man over six feet tall and weighing two hundred pounds. He fought bravely in the wars against the Indians and in the Revolutionary War against England.

After the United States won its freedom from England, Washington became the first President of our country. He served as President for eight years. After his term as President was over, he went back to his home at Mount Vernon to live. He died there in 1799. Washington was so loved by his countrymen that we now observe his birthday as a holiday every year.
