Subject/Predicate Lesson 001

Skills - Complete Subject

The subject of a sentence is the word or words that tell who or what the sentence is about. The complete subject is the subject and all the words that go along with it, like words that describe. The predicate tells what the subject is or does. All the words that go along with the predicate are called the complete predicate. Look at this example sentence:

The village people sell fruit and vegetables at the market.

The red part of the sentence is the complete subject. In this case it tells who the sentence is about. The word people is the subject. The words 'The village' describe people. The rest of the sentence is the complete predicate. It tells what the people did. The predicate is the word 'sell'. The rest of the words in the complete predicate tell what was sold, and add information to the predicate.

2. A piece of string was tied around the bundle.
3. The pages of the book were dirty and torn.
4. The apple pie was cut in six pieces.
5. Do you remember your first day at school?

6. The road curved around the mountain.
7. A wall of rock was on one side of us.
8. The year 1976 had 366 days.
9. This table has a broken leg.
10. Who broke a limb from the peach tree?
11. In spite of the rain, a large crowd was present.
12. The meeting was held in a large room.
13. On sunny days, the children play outdoors.
14. The blue and white paper made a pleasing sight.
15. An old house was near the beach.

16. The man read the letter again and again.

17. The little car rolled over and over.

18. A dog with a leather collar ran across the path.
19. A bottle of ink was upset on the desk.
20. A well-cooked dinner was served at one o'clock.
21. On a high hill a white horse stood quietly.
22. The oranges turned yellow in the sun.
23. Bubbles appeared on the surface of the water.
