Verbs Lesson 001

Skills - Recognizing Verbs

A verb is a word which declares something about the subject. It expresses (1) action, (2) being, or (3) state of being.

Every sentence must contain a verb.

Examples: (1) The boys play ball. (2) The men are living. (3) The horse is old.

Write the verbs you find in the following sentences.

 

1. The man spoke in a loud voice.

2. The title of the book is stamped on the cover.
3. The title of the book is "Soldiers of Valley Forge".
4. The sun sank slowly below the horizon.
5. A bright fire burned in the grate.
6. Wednesday is the fourth day of the week.
7. Robinson Crusoe lived on a desert isle.
8. How many letters are in our alphabet?
9. Dick and Norman drink milk at school.
10. Large green worms ate the young tomato plants.

11. The cat played the fiddle while the cow jumped over the moon.

12. California is a large state.

13. Do you read good magazines?

14. Who came into the kitchen?

15. People exchange gifts on Christmas Day.
16. Smoke is black and snow is white.
17. Washington's army crossed the Delaware River.
18. The kittens mewed and the dogs howled.
19. The rope broke and the door fell.
