When the person or thing talked about is a singular noun or is one of the singular pronouns, she, he, or it, you should use the singular form of the verb in the sentence. Is and was are singular verb forms.

When a plural noun or pronoun is used as the subject, you should always use a plural verb form. Are and were are plural verb forms.
