is located at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula in the
Mediterranean Sea.
Greece includes many islands and no part of Greece is more than 85 miles (137 kilometers) from the sea. It is a country of seafaring people and has one of the largest merchant ship fleets in the world. |

Greece is one of the oldest nations in Europe where Western civilization started about 2,500 years ago. Magnificent ruins stand in Athens, the capital of Greece, showing the buildings of the past.
