An archipelago is a group or chain of islands.
  Archipelagos usually occur in the open ocean. Sometimes they are the tops of volcanoes or undersea mountains. There are many archipelagos. Some that you may know are Japan, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Bahamas.
 

Japan's islands are very large. They are shown in the tan color. Tokyo is the capital city. If you look southwest you will see the Ryukyu Islands. They are also part of the archipelago. Okinawa is its major island. Naha is Okinawa's major city.

Japan is located in the western Pacific Ocean and is considered part of Asia.

 

These are the major Hawaiian Islands. There are many small islands with no people living on them that you don't see here. All the islands make up the archipelago of Hawaii. The islands are located in the Pacific Ocean.

Hawaii is one of the states of the United States. Out of the 50 states, it was the last one to become a state.

 

These are the islands that make up the Bahama archipelago. To the northwest is the state of Florida in the United States.

The Bahamas are located in the Atlantic Ocean. Nassau is the capital. Many people from the east coast of the United States travel to the Bahama's for vacation. The weather is always warm.

The Bahamas are often hit by tropical storms called hurricanes.
