A continent is one of Earth's seven main continuous expanses of land.

In the United States and most native English speaking countries, we teach our children that there are 7 continents - North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. Other countries teach different models.

This model puts North America and South America together. It is called the Americas. With this model you have 6 continents.

This model puts Europe and Asia together. It is also a 6 continent model.

Most models calls this area Oceania rather than Australia. It includes a larger area than Australia - look at all the islands that are included in this model.

Antarctica

The cultures of North America and South America are very different. The cultures of Europe and Asia are also very different. I like the 7 continent model. I do think using the name Oceania rather than Australia is a pretty good idea.
