A dune is a mound, hill, or ridge of sand heaped up by the wind.

The ripples of sand on this desert
dune are caused by wind.

The first photo shows dunes that are located along a seacoast. You find the dunes inland from the beach.

Other dunes are found in desert regions. The sand is blown into hills because there are no trees to break the wind. The highest dune in the world is shown in the photo to the left. Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado, has the highest dune in the United States.
