Gulf of Mexico

A gulf is part of an ocean that extends into the land. It is larger than a bay.

The Persian Gulf

Two of the better known gulfs are the Gulf of Mexico and the Persian Gulf.

A gulf has land on three sides. The land sticking out at each end of the gulf is called a headland. Look at the Gulf of Mexico to the left. The eastern headland is the state of Florida in the United States. This headland is also a peninsula. The western headland is the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. This photo also shows water depth. The dark blue is the deepest.
