An isthmus is a narrow strip of land that connects two larger bodies of land.
 

 

An isthmus is the opposite of a strait - a narrow body of water that connects two larger bodies of water.

 

Isthmus of Panama

An isthmus is usually a good place to build a canal to connect the two bodies of water on either side of the landmass. The Panama Canal was built across the Isthmus of Panama. It opened a waterway for large ships to pass between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

 

Isthmus of Suez

The Suez canal makes a waterway between the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea. This opens up a water passage from Europe to Asia. The isthmus connects northern Africa (at Egypt) to Asia's Sinai Peninsula (which is also in Egypt.
