An oasis is a fertile area in a desert that is watered by a spring.

The location of oasis has been of critical importance for trade and transportation routes in desert areas. Caravans must travel by oasis to get food and water. So, political or military control of an oasis has, in many cases, meant control of trade on a particular route.

Oasis areas can be large enough to support a village, many villages and even small cities. It depends on the amount of fresh water available.

An oasis may be an area that has water just below the surface of the sand or ground. Plants are able to get their roots down to the water so they can grow. An oasis may have a well.
