An ocean is one of the five large bodies of salt water that covers the earth.

There are four oceans on earth. Or are there more? When Professor Nibble learned about the oceans, he was told the four oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic.

Some geographers are now saying we actually have five oceans. They have named the ocean surrounding Antarctica - the Southern Ocean. So, if we now have five major oceans on earth, they would be listed in size like this:
1 - Pacific Ocean
2 - Atlantic Ocean
3 - Indian Ocean
4 - Southern Ocean
5 - Arctic Ocean

This decision was made in the year 2000.

Oceans cover about 70% of the Earth's surface. The oceans contain roughly 97% of the Earth's water supply.

island - small bodies of land surrounded by ocean water
sea - often a body of water that is connected to an ocean; geographers call this part of the ocean a sea because of its relationship with the surrounding land

There are many other landform terms that are related to oceans.
