A plateau is an area of elevated flat land.
 

Plateaus cover about 45 percent of Earth's surface. You may not even know you live on a plateau.

 

The Tibetan Plateau or Chang Tang is the highest and largest plateau on earth; three times the size of Texas or France. It is called the "roof of the world".

 

Much of the state of Washington is a plateau called the Columbia River Plateau. This same plateau covers a lot of northern Oregon and some of Idaho.
