A prairie is a wide, mostly flat area of land that has grasses and only a few trees.

Most of the Great Plains, including the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa, and much of Missouri and Minnesota, is considered prairie. Almost all of this area has been changed into farmland in the last two hundred years.

In Canada, the western provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, have a lot of prairies where there are many grasslands and shrubs.

Prairies usually have temperate climates, moderate rainfall, and grasses, herbs, and shrubs, rather than trees.
