A source is the starting point of a river or stream.

The diagrams shown above and to the left show the source of a river to be in the mountains and hills. All these rivers or streams (called tributaries) flow into the main river.

The source may be snow or glacier melting, rain water runoff, or water from ground springs. Many times a river's source is a combination of all of these.

This stream may be close to a river's source. Many streams like this one flow into larger streams and finally into what we would call a river.
