A tributary
is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river or lake.

In these first two photos you can see many tributaries flowing into a main river. In the first photo, notice the Illinois River and the Missouri River. They are big rivers that have tributaries flowing into them. But even these two rivers are tributaries. Notice they both flow into the mighty Mississippi River that empties into the Gulf of Mexico. |
